'Gentlemen start your Engines' fits the bill perfectly. The Ferrari 400i is a Gentlemen express par excellence from the classic era. And then there's the engine! 12-cylinders in a V-shape based on the famed Colombo engine block which you find in the celebrated 365GTB/Daytona. The stylish lines of the Ferrari 400 are appreciated more and more, after all, a sports car design from the 1980s made a different impression ten years ago than nowadays. Moreover, back in the day she was not as classic as she is today. Based on the 365GT4 2+2 which appeared in 1972 she features a 70s design which was ahead of its time, perhaps the reason why only now the public truly starts appreciating her. Combined with the scarcity of the manual version, of which only 422 were constructed, the reasons are numerous, an explosive value-development as a result. Rightly so, with a lot of value for money. Gorgeous Pininfarina design, an atmospheric interior upholstered in beautiful materials, a reliable V12 with Bosch injection, timing chains, and impressive driving characteristics all for a fair price. In this colouration in combination with the light interior a jewel. In 2010 this 400i was imported by us, at the time she was part of an Italian collection which took away the disadvantages of the high humidity here in the Netherlands. An original and truly stunning example
Options were hardly existent in those days. Evidently for this price you received a full leather interior, air-conditioning, electric windows and alloy wheels.
Executed in Azzurro Metallizzato, flawless paint with no marks. Nice and straight panels, she remains damage free. No rust, and fully free from any stone chips, even the fragile bumpers are unmarked. The incredibly hard to source indicator lenses on the front of the car are new. All the glazing is original and undamaged, the factory sticker remains on the windshield. This 400i as a whole makes a remarkably nice, classic and stylish impression.
The interior of this 400i is wholly original, purely the floor mats have been renewed once, and remain as new. The smudge-sensitive Tobacco seats are nicely clean and remain in their original shape, still offering their full support. The door cards, dashboard, and all switchgear are all undamaged and clean. The leather upholstered steering wheel is undamaged and nicely smooth. This 400i has never been smoked in.
The original 310bhp strong V12 with double Bosch fuel-injection, wet-sump, adjustable timing chains, and overhead camshafts one finds in the neatly kept engine compartment. All just as nice as when she rolled out of the factory, plates, stickers and bonnet isolation material are all neatly presented. The engine runs perfectly, does not smoke, and has excellent oil-pressure. In the boot one finds the original, clean and undamaged upholstery, as well as a full-size spare, and the toolkit and jack. The pretty Cromodora wheels are undamaged and free from brake dust. The Michelin TRX tires still feature plenty of tread.
In 2010 we imported this 400i from Italy. We delivered the car to her only Dutch owner, for business reasons he had to part with her a few years ago. Our accountant surely knows his classics, working at Witmer & Odijk would be a challenge otherwise... He bought the car and made it his project to bring her back to pristine condition over the years. He had the complete exhaust system replaced for a brand-new stainless-steel unit, replaced the clutch, modified the ignition; electric system, had major servicing done, installed new shock absorbers, and got new floor mats. The accountant now has an even higher goal, resulting in the sale of this 400i. Our accountant is a realist, and knows the market, therefore priced attractively, for the 'quick' decider. But be quick before he changes his mind, I would advise you. This Ferrari 400i is a truly above average nice example which also drives wonderfully. Study the market, and you will find the supply and price point in the rest of Europe to be minimal and high. Making this one a good investment for one who can appreciate her value.
