Mid 1980s the American Saab importer came up with the idea of selling a convertible version of the already successfully landed 900, especially in the sunny states of the US a convertible 900 would be considered very attractive. In Sweden this was not particularly a priority. Understandable. And so it started. 900 hardtops were delivered to Valmet (reputable producer in the industry, that for example built the Boxster for Porsche) located in Finland where they made the cars into convertibles. Evidently equipped with required reinforcement and different doors to hug the large sills. This production process made it very costly to build a 900 convertible. As a result of this and high taxes on vehicles the catalogue price of a 900 convertible in The Netherlands at the time was around fl.100.000, - Almost twice the price of a hardtop 900. At the time that kind of money would also buy you an apartment. The model gained appreciation over the years, and, because there are not a lot of alternatives, is nowadays a looked after car. After all, which convertible offers aside fun also this amount of practical space and safety. Meanwhile they are 20 years old which makes it harder and harder to find a nice and scarcely used exemplar. They have never been worth the amount of money one would have to invest into a proper restoration, which is why I look into nice and well-kept original exemplars. Of which one this is.
This 900 Classic has been fitted with air-conditioning, four electric powered windows, central locking, anthracite leather seats, an electric powered convertible roof, original Saab alloy wheels, a modern radio/cd player with a detachable front (which can be replaced for a nicer option) and electric adjustable mirrors
The body of this 900 is wholly rust and damage free. The car has never been in an accident, and therefore no parts have ever been replaced. The bumpers are nice and straight. The paint has a deep lustre, the car has evidently always been garaged throughout its life. There are no stone chips to be found on the bonnet whatsoever. The body is also free from dents or other traces of usage. The convertible roof is the original factory roof and looks as if she were new. This says something about the minor usage of this 900 and a lot about the originality. The appearance of this car is best described as' above averagely pretty'
The interior appears very well cared for and has no significant traces of usage, especially when you consider its age. Flawless and original leather on the good and spacious Saab seats. The steering wheel does not show wear. Door cards remain original with their original factory upholstery. All dashboard functions work accordingly and a nice sounding radio/cd player with a detachable front has been fitted, not something you would want to miss in a convertible. The carpeting remains very clean and tidy. On delivery we will provide a set of new floor mats.
Especially nice for the enthusiast is the condition of the engine compartment. The white exterior paint is clearly evident throughout, and no rust nor signs of oil can be seen. The gearbox is clearly bone dry. It becomes very clear this car has been maintained meticulously. New spark plug leads and distributor, new battery and neat cabling. The luggage compartment is nicely dry and clean, not something to brush over, as leakage could have deteriorated the luggage compartment, which evidently is not the case here. The toolkit is complete, and the space save is present. The alloy wheels are undamaged and in excellent condition. The tires have been replaced not too long ago and have sufficient thread for many miles to come.
I acquired this pretty Saab from the second owner who cherished her for over fifteen years. It was with some hesitation his staff sold me the car as their emphatic employer had sadly recently passed away. The original instruction and service manuals are present, as is the spare key. On delivery the car will receive a new MOT, service and a warranty on the engine and gearbox. Our mechanics can dream this car after we have sold well over 700 exemplars to happy customers and are more than knowledgeable to deliver an excellently driving and reliable Saab 900.
